Gothic Remake Lockpicking Guide

Lockpicking in Gothic Remake is a logic puzzle, not a reflex test. Once you understand how the plates and links work, every lock in the game — from a bandit chest to a seven-plate master lock — becomes solvable in under a minute. This guide explains the mechanics and the exact method the GothicTool lockpick solver uses.

The anatomy of a lock

A lock is a stack of 4 to 7 metal plates. Each plate has seven holes, numbered −3 (far left) to +3 (far right), and a pin sitting in one of them. The plates stack toward you: plate 1 is at the back, and the highest-numbered plate is the front plate where your lockpick enters. The lock opens when every pin is centered at 0.

How plates move

On each turn you pick one plate and push it one hole left (+1) or right (−1). The catch: plates are linked. Moving a plate can drag others along — either in the same direction or the opposite direction. A plate at the edge cannot move further; it stays clamped at −3 or +3 even if a link pulls it.

You can discover the links safely in-game: move one plate a single step and watch which other plates shift. Undo, repeat for each plate, and you have the full link map — exactly what the solver’s Interactions matrix stores.

What the lockpicking skill does

Investing in the lockpicking skill does not change the rules — it removes links between plates. With a low skill, moving one plate might drag three others with it; with a high skill, most plates move independently. Fewer links means shorter solutions, which is why master lockpickers open the same lock in fewer moves.

Solving a lock step by step

  1. Open the lockpicking screen and count the plates (4–7).
  2. Read every plate’s position from −3 to +3, starting with the back plate.
  3. Map the links by test-moving each plate one step and noting which plates follow (same or opposite).
  4. Enter everything into the solver: plate count, start pins, and the Interactions matrix.
  5. Press Solve lock and follow the grouped steps — “Plate 2 → Right ×3” means push plate 2 right three times.
